These old components still allow the amplifier to operate temporarily. After we do your initial repair these weak components can fail in a short period of time. We hope you will understand we can only warranty our work and parts that we replaced. Many of the old weakened parts will eventually need to be replaced. We bench test/burn your amp in for 2-4 hours after repairs to make sure nothing else is on the edge of failing but we do not replace every component in your amp that is still working. Old capacitors and resistors can fail again at any moment.

Does your Car Amplifier Need to be repaired?

You have just turned your car audio system on and there is no sound. You are hearing strange noises from your system. Sounds you have never heard before or you suddenly get a burning smell. You might actually see smoke coming from your system!
Well the first thing you should do is either pull all the fuses from the car amplifier and audio system. If that is not possible disconnect the battery immediately before more damage occurs.

How to trouble shoot your car amplifier?

Your amplifier is now disconnected from all 12 volt battery power and you are stumped on what to do next.

Is my car electrical system putting out enough voltage to run my car amplifier?

Your battery should be putting out 12.6 volts minimum to 14.4 volts on the high side. Check your amplifiers instruction manual to confirm that the proper operating voltage range is obtained.
Note: Some amps are extremely flexible with numerous built in safeguards. Some can run on as low as 8 volts and as high as 16 volts. We recommend to never run your system below 12 volts regardless of what the manufacturer says. Even if the amplifier can run at 8 volts we doubt the head unit, preamps, crossovers and digital signal processors(DSP) can run at such a low voltage. By doing this you could possibly induce distortions and noises ahead of the amplifier stage. This will cause massive damage or complete failure of your speakers and may damage the amp also. Your amplifier will typically put out 10% more power at 14.4 volts than it will at 12.6 volts. And it will have more dynamic range and headroom and less distortion at the same output levels.
Ok the voltage checks out and is in the normal range – Now what?

Does my car electrical system put out enough voltage under extreme loads?

While many car electrical systems put out enough voltage with the system off they can be compromised when the system is on. So you need to check these first.
Battery has a dead short?
Remove your battery and take it to an auto parts store or battery testing facility. Have them run a load check on it. A battery can appear normal under mild use but under load a mild or dead short can occur. This can cause the voltages to plummet below 12 volts. Your amp may either shutoff completely, go into protection mode, distort horribly or make very bad sounds. This can cause more damage to your system.
Ok the battery checks out normal under the load test – Now What?

How many batteries do I need to run my car amplifier and car audio system?

10 x (Battery power capacity in Amp Hours) / max amplifier power consumption in Watts) will give you the resulting run time in hours.
Take a system like this for an example. If you had a 2000 watt amplifier. You have an AGM or LIPO(lithium Ion) high current battery with a Amp Hour rating of 120 (AH). By using this conservative equation you would have a probable run time of about 36 minutes without your car motor running. Simply relying on battery power reserves to run your system (1200/2000 = .6 hours or 36 minutes of runtime.

Remember an amplifier does not put out its rated capacity continuously when playing music. The run time in actual use may be more. But this formula is correct if you were playing a single test tone at maximum power for the entire 36 minutes.
Note: Not all batteries with the same capacity (AH) can put out the same maximum instantaneous current. For instance a 120 AH Lithium Ion(LiPo) battery can put out significantly more current instantly than a comparable size lead acid battery. Your amp will sound cleaner and punchier with LiPo for power!
The LiPo batteries also charge much faster so the recovery time to play loud again is vastly improved. And the voltage output of LiPo is nearly flat until it is nearly depleted. Whereas a lead acid battery voltage slowly declines as it gets nearer to the point of full depletion. So in layman’s terms a Lithium Ion battery lets your amplifier put out full power for longer under identical circumstances.
Ok my batteries have enough reserves to run my system – Now What?

Is my Alternator big enough for my car amplifier and audio system?

Upgrade your vehicles charging system with a High Output Heavy Duty Alternator.

As you add more amplifiers and audio equipment to your car the big problems can soon rear their ugly head. The factory alternator size was calculated by the electrical needs of the factory radio and accessories. It has a little bit of extra capacity for safety margins beyond that. But never did the car manufacturer envision your 8000 watt system in your car. Now your little 55 to 130 amp output factory alternator is maxed out and still cannot keep up. With a little research you can find aftermarket manufacturers that make high output upgraded alternators. With outputs from 200 to 400 amps. And there are pulley and bracket kits that allow the installation of a second alternator. In most cases these will solve your voltage and charging problems if used in conjunction with upgraded Lithium Ion batteries.

Note: If you are buying a new car in some cases you can special order a larger high output alternator. Some trucks even have a dual high output alternator option! If you see a high powered car amplifier and mobile audio system in your future be sure to check this option if it is available.

Is my alternator putting out the proper voltage or spiking?

While you have your car battery load tested the same machine can often check the alternator to insure it is performing to its proper specification. We have seen many times where those have malfunctions that deliver more the 20 volts to your system. This can cause major damage including smoke, fire, ECU failures, burnt outputs and many other problems.
Note: Your Lipo battery may need a special tester different than one used to test a standard lead acid battery.

Is my battery power and ground wire of sufficient size to run my car amplifier?

Once again the cable sizes in your factory built electrical system were engineered for normal situations not an 8000 watt or 10000 watt audio system. Consult with your battery and alternator manufacturer for the proper size cables that may need to be retrofitted.
